I think Risperdoal is poison, and should be taken off of the market! No matter who takes it they see things and hear things and the other side effects are heartbreaking. If you lawyer says you have a case please post here so I can see my lawyer too.

is this drug safe and effective for a 4 year old

I think maybe you should get a second opion with a doctor and see what he says. But don't tell him about the first doctor. see if he say's the same thing and if he dosen't then I would go to a lawyer least you have back up. Because lawers won't take the case unless it is clear. they might ask you in court how you felt about him being on differnet meds and they would say why didn't you stop the meds yourself. I just went threw it with my father he had passed away and I could swear it was because of a drug he was taking that doctor wasn't keeping close tabs on him. we took the case to a lawyer and it was denied. So what i learned from this is to go with your gut instict with med if you feel that something isn't working take them off of it and do as much research on the med. Well I wish you the best of luck if you do take it to the lawers. Plus I would do research on that doctor to see if he has any malpractice.

Hi, I just read your comment on risperdal and kids. We too, have tried many adhd medications... although I think my son has sensory issues more than adhd. He has been on risperdal for a week now and is a different child. I feel like I am getting to know him for who he is... the sweet boy underneath all the psychological baggage. I am so pleased. I obviously can't help but worry about side effects. Can you share your experience with the drug with me?

Thanks

Can you be more specific, my son is 4 has ADHD and ODD, is on a form of ritalin and Risperdal and clonodine(which helps him sleep at night)... my son takes a total of .75 mg of risperdal a day.... what signs should I be watching for? He has been on it for over 6 months now????

Hi Patty. My 7 year old son has been on Risperdal .5 mg for 4 months now and is doing terrific! I have not noticed any side effects and his behavior has improved drastically. He is also taking Concerta for his ADHD. Together these medications have enabled him to perform at school 100% better. As I'm sure you are, we are not looking at this as a long term solution but only temporary while he grows & matures. So I would be interested too in hearing about someone's personal experience with Risperal & it's side effects.

My daughter is on Concerta 36mg and Risperdal .025 (2xdaily)
We have tried many many different meds. The Concerta would work for only a month or so and than she would have emotional outburst. The Risperdal has greatly improved these outburst, but I feel I am drugging my child very day to help others (teachers) deal with her. At her last school evaluation (February) the school wanted to put her in the emotional disturbed catagory. I refused to let this happen and they put her in "other" catagory so she could still reveive OP and PT.
IS all these meds safe???? She is more fun and outgoing when she takes them.

My son has ADD . He is taking .5 risperdal daily and he keeps seeing bugs and feels them and hears them. The doctor said to give him benedril to relax him. Will he ever stop worring about bugs???

Maybe you could teach him about bugs to remove his fear. Tell him about lady bugs and harless bugs and how they help the earth...Just a thought.
The whloe point of med is to help or kids not help the teachers or schools! Try and also put the kids on ADHD \ADD diets, One is posted on this blog. Ask a nurtishanist about the thing you could have you child take tohelp...Befored you buy anything check with your Dr. Some Meds do not mix with holistic treatments.
Good Luck to all.

My child was on Risperdal for a short timeframe. We removed her from it mainly because of weight gain. Having mild CP, the weight was beginning to cause walking problems. Anyway, I also saw wonderful changes in her behavior. She was no longer physically abusive towards me, etc. However, during the time of her being on this med we did seek out a neurologist (regarding a MRI scan) and during his consultation he mentioned he never worked with Risperdal any longer. He defined his statement by saying that a child's brain is still developing (my daughter is 9 years old) and this drug can cause long term problems dealing with anxiety. She is now on Abilify, a lower dose and still no behavioral problems. But all anti psycotic drugs can have long term effects and all drugs affect each of us differently. I'm sorry your child has been having a negative problem with the meds. We also had to try several drugs until we found one that worked. Good luck.

My son is in Foster Care in Michigan and I was just told that he saw a psychiatrist (sp?) whom has prescribed risperdal for him...they say to help him sleep! I have seen alot of negative things being said about this drug and I am VERY concerned about this! My son just turned 6...I have refused permission for the state to give the medication to him but they are going in front of a judge to try and get a court order for it...Anyone have any suggestions on how I can fight this?

My son has been on risperdal for the last 2 weeks. He's eating like a horse, which I'm a little worried about. A good thing is he's able to sleep now. Can he focus better? I don't notice a difference, he's still loud, silly, acts before he thinks and has a problem identifying how his actions effect others. But isn't that part of being 7? We've tried Ritalin, Concerta, Adderal. Has anyone used the patch? or how about or what other drugs? The boy has a genius IQ I don't want to destroy that with medication.

What were the side effects?? I have a son on Risperdal, he's been on it for 2yrs and is 12yrs old now!!
Cheers!

Good side effects, It makes him sleepy so it's easy for him to stick with the "only 1 time allowed up from bed after tuck in" rule.
I can live with side effects, He eats double what he used to.
Bad side effects, nothing major, he will stare off into space every now and then, his moods still swing.
He only takes .5 twice a day. I've spoken to his Dr and he believes my son should stay on the risperdal till after school starts so we can get a better picture of how he'll do in that enviroment. I've agreed to that, but I'm watching my sone very closely.

I am extremely concerned as my 9yr. old son is on Risperdal and my 8 yr. old son was previously on this medication. I have not seen any side effects from the medication. My 9yr. old has been on the medication for at least 3 yrs.

wow 4 years old and on meds already? It's just my opinion but isn't that kind of young to be medicated? I see medications being used for schol age children, becuase of the issues involved and being in a school environment. My don is 11 and is ashs and not medicated at this time, goign thru court with his father. he doesn't want them used at all and I just want to get him any kind of help, plus more, but i have tried meds with him short term before his father threw a fit and changed his mind about them, but he was school age, 3rd grade. I would do as much research as you can online and at library about medicating that young. I k now it's done but seems excesive to me, there are many cases of the drugs not working or having adverse effects on children. just my opinion of course. don't mean to belittle.

well we think that our son did a whole lot better on risperadal than off!! before taking that he was on ritilin and that was a nightmare!!! he then tryed risperidal and he was doing good but he gained 15 pds. in 1 month and thats not good, so then we put him on geodone and i cant see a difference in his bad behavior. i hope to find one that works soon. oh , he was on 2.0 mg twice daily and that really was nice he was really calm but not groggy..

my stepson had been on Ritalin and Risperdal since was 4, it wasnt until he come to live with us in November 2005 we had him looked at by a doctor who swithched his meds to Concerta and seroquel, with the concerta he started out with a low dosage and went all the way to 72mg aday, and 75mg of seroquel, but we did not see a differnce in his behaviour he was getting more violent, his outburst were more frequent and he was still very hyper, and he also has a bug issue, this kid will not go outside if there are bees around. We have now taken him off the concerta as of today and weeining him off the seroquel under the watch of a child phyciatrist. We are hoping that there will be a difference with his behaviour once he is clean. I am now wondering what kind of withdrawl signs I should be looking for. If anyone is in the process of taking their child off the medication I would appreciate any feed back on withdrawl symptoms.

I was actually on Risperdal for about 6 years as a child and I had some side effects that I can recall which were bothersome, but not devistating to me long term. I don't suffer from any side effects of the drug now and I actually am taking clonodine; a similar RX to Risperdal, and I have been on this RX since I was 8. I feel, however, I'd rather be on the meds than be without them. You just have to weigh the pros and the cons and you may have to try out other meds until you find one that works for your child. Best of luck to you all!

My 5 1/2 year old son has just started taking .25mg of the liquid form of Risperdal, along with a daily dose of 5mg of Focaline. Any tips on disguising the horrible taste of the Risperdal?

I'm a psychotherapist who works with kids. I work for two psychiatrists who will prescribe patients medication and then refer them to their staff of therapists for therapy. I haven't had a lot of training on medication but I know a lot of the kids I work with are put on Risperdal. Some of the kids are young, 4 and 5. I know it's not uncommon for docs to go to antidepressants or antipsychotics for ADHD symptoms and behaivor problems. Any psychotropic medication (whether it is an antipsychotic or antidepressant) works on any of the same three brain chemicals; norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine. I hope your child is doing well and is not suffering any other effects once it is totally out of their system. Please keep us updated on what you decided to do and how your child is doing.

My 5 year old foster son was recently put on Risperdal along with the Ritalin Patch called Daytrana. He is diagnosed with ADHD and ODD. The Risperdal has certainly changed his behavior for the better. He is much more calm and not as likely to attack me when he is unhappy. It can be hard being hit and kicked by a 5 year old and his meltdowns can go on for hours. I am concerned about the long term effects of the Risperdal however. Does anyone have any insight into the effects of this medication?

I think that you should seek a second opion on the diagnosis because there are many forms of ADHD and it's hard for anyone to know what it is unless they have all the facts. All meds have side effects and they effect everyone differently. There is a test on line that my sons Dr. suggested we take and there was no dought that my son has ADHD but we are still trying to figure out which kind he has. I took the test at his office but i can find out the web site name for you if your interested. The test asks alot of the same questions over and over, but I guess it's the way they word the questions. If you have doubt at all talk to another Dr. it may shed some light for you.

Medicine for kids like this is all trial and error. It was good that you noticed bad side effects and brought it to the doctors attention so your child can be taken off. You should seek a second opinion to see if the doctor's diagnosis is correct or not. If it is correct and your child needs to be on medicine it is alot of finding the medicine that works.

P.S. my son has also been on Risperdal for a couple of years and the first day he took it he was "different". You could actually talk to him without the outburst. It has worked well. He also takes Adderrall. and for the weight gain problem -- my son is thin and for a while he was actually taking periatic for weight gain. I don't think that side effect happens to everyone. Also, i was told that Risperdal is not a long term medicine because long term use can cause tics or carcachia (i am not sure how to spell it). I am now working with my doctors to wean him off his medications; not all but to cut down on what he has been taking (he has been on meds since 3 and is now 12). so that as he gets older he can try to cope with his symptoms and sometimes these kids get better with maturity (although i am not sure this is my case because he was pretty severe with it and that is why he started meds at 3). He now just started Wellbutrin to take with his Adderrall and Tenex (the combination works well) and soon we will be weaning off the risperdal (and it has worked great) buti don't want to be responsible for the side effects when he is older.

My 9 year old son has been on risperdal for 2 weeks now and I haven't noticed any difference.I am still kind of confused as to why he is on it when he is not psychotic.I did get a 2nd opinion and they recommended the same thing. It seems to be the "in "drug to prescibe.how long should it take to start working?

Hi, I really don't know anything about risperdal, but my daughter is on the daytrana patch, her eating is way better than when she was on metadate or concerta and I like that I can take it off when she comes home from school. She is on a 10 mg patch and it hasn't affected her sleep at all. Overall aside from the fact that I hate having to medicate her at all. She has done very well with it.

Hi Patty....I took my son to his Dr and he referred me to a Dr that deals with ADHD, ADD,ODD...etc. when he was four and the Dr told me she wouldn't do a diagnosis at that age cause his brain was still developing and she didn't do it until after he was 5.

Name: flare2005 | Date: Dec 7th, 2006 9:41 AM
Not to scare anyone but I was on the website drugs.com and this is what I read about the drug that I didn't know.

Children-Studies on this medicine have been done only in adult patients, and there is no specific information comparing use of risperidone in children with use in other age groups.

just thought I'd share it with you.

Hi My son is 9 and has been on meds for about a year and and a half now. He has been diagnosed with ADHD and ODD. He is taking 25mg of Strattera and 10mg of Adderall Xr. He was doing fairly well with these for a year however he is getting out of control and very arguementative with adults. So his Dr has decided as of yesterday to up his meds to 40mg Strattera and 20mg of Adderall XR. I have to take him back in 3 weeks and if we do not notice a difference in him then he wants to put him on the Risperdal. His Dr has said if he goes on this med he will have to do follow up blood work on him every 6 mos to a year. My son has been tested at a genuis IQ which makes his ADHD and ODD even more severe because he thinks he can get over on you. I can deal with the ADHD however the ODD is where the real problem lies. Everything in his opinion is not fair. I don't care what it is he asks if you say know then to him it is not fair. So I am hoping that uping his meds will do the trick and I will not have to make that decision to put him on a different med that I have worry will give him side effects. He is very thin so I really don't think the weight gain will be a problem. Strattera and Adderall work the oppisite of Risperdal because they are an surpress the appitite. Thanks for Listening and if anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

its all trial and error every child is different and reacts different to meds, sorry your son has experienced extreme side effects , but most times these meds are helping our children so i worry if you sue than more doctors are going to back off and from help our kids dont get me wrong its not fair that some kids get worse while on meds i have the deepest simpathy but i feel a law suite is not going to help but hinder. i wander if trying to advocate and raise money for more research and use of mri and testing tools will be a better solution. truly this field could use a buste in finding better alternatives for our children. hope i ws helpful
